Have you heard of the ELTE Peer Counselling Group? Do you know where to go if you could use some help with life or just feel like talking to someone? Have you tried the Tandem Programme, making new friends and practising language at the same time?

If your answer is no to either of the questions above, then read on!

What is this all about? The ELTE Peer Counselling Group is a circle of Psychology students at ELTE working on a voluntary basis. Our aim is to make your life easier and give you a hand to work your issues out when necessary. We all work under the supervision of professionals as well as taking further trainings constantly to be of you help the best way we can. What we think to be very important, though, is that we are all peers, we opt for the same perspectives, hardships and fun, so we definitely have a lot in common. This way, we get a better understanding of each others’ thoughts and issues and can be more of your help. If you feel a bit lost or alone in Budapest, experience cultural shocks or you simply can't handle some issues in life, feel free to contact us! You can find your peer counsellors on this link and they are more than happy to help anytime if you send them a message or pay a visit during office hours. For office hours, see our website. Feel free to visit us anytime to ask for an appointment or get some more details on events, etc.

What do we offer? Currently, we have three main services for foreign students and we aim to increase them.

Firstly, we are happy to have a chat with you on any issue you feel you are stuck with if you contact us in person in our office at office hours or if you email us and make an appointment.

Secondly, there’s a quite popular project called the “Tandem”. This is a language exchange, which offers meeting new people and learning new languages as well as having endless fun. It is a unique opportunity that is not to be missed if you fancy learning from a native speaker, e.g. a Hungarian student can teach Hungarian to an Italian student, and the Italian student can teach Italian in return. The place, time and frequency of meetings are up to you completely and you are not obliged to use any specific textbooks, nor to have any professional experience. You can apply on our Facebook page or simply fill in our application form.

As an extra, we have a Film Club, which offers you screenings in English. We announce the exact dates and films on social media platforms and posters, so don't forget to check our Facebook page for the most up-to-date info!

If you have any questions, you can email us anytime.

Hope to see you soon!:)

Your peer counsellors

Noémi László
Hey, my name’s Noemi and I’ve been with the Peer Counselling Group for over two years now. I started my studies in the United Kingdom, graduated in Hungary, then followed with an Erasmus exchange in the Netherlands. Living and studying in different countries, getting used to new people or find your way around can be a challenge sometimes and when life becomes confusing, and we’ve all been there:), it feels great to know there’s someone you can always talk to, share your experiences with or figure things out together. Whenever life gets complicated, feel free to contact me by email (laszlo.noemi@gmail.com) anytime.

Ádám Dóka
Hi! I’m Adam and this is my final year as a psychology student in the masters program. What I have learned during my studies and also in my life in general is that many times events (or the absence of events) - be them ‘huge or small’ - can change the way we look at the world and also ourselves. We cannot see clearly sometimes, we may be confused about things we thought were stable, things we thought we could count on. If you would like to, I would be more than willing to be your counsel figuring it out.

Renáta Farkas
Hi! I am Renata, I major in psychology and this is my senior year. I know it from my own experience, that there are some situations in life, especially when you get into a new environment that you can hardly understand people around you, even though you speak the same language. Your not alone with the feeling that being in a foreign country for several months is tough, lots of students feel the same way. So don’t be ashamed, feel free to ask for support. As a peer consultant I am open for a conversation, any time you feel like it would be conforting to talk to somebody. You can contact me via e-mail (info@kortars.elte.hu) or visit me at the office in Múzeum krt. 4. (building D, room -119.) on Thursdays between 2pm and 3pm.

Anna Nyulászi
My name is Anna, I am 23 years old. I've just started my Master studies in Psychology at ELTE. I was studying a semester in Germany, in Cologne as an Erasmus-student. I also lived for shorter periods in other parts of Germany. While studying abroad you can feel a bit lost in a different culture (not to talk about the Hungarian language) or as an outsider, or just alone, or it can happen that you just can't handle some problems in the daily life. (At least I had those experiences:). If you would like to share these experiences with someone, don't be afraid, I will be happy to listen to them.

Edit Vámosi
Hi, I am Edit, a last year student in psychology. It is my second year as a member of the Peer Counselling Group. I studied one and a half year abroad, in the United States and in Poland. I experienced the culture shock, the language barrier and I know how hard can it be to be away from the family and friends. A lot of things are different around you and it can be difficult to stay who you are and enjoy your life experience as much as you can. If you feel like it, we can talk about these experiences, about you to make your stay unforgettable.
